Compostable vs recyclable. This is a debate that’s been going on for years, and not just about coffee pods, but about cups, packaging and a few other categories.

Why we chose compostable pods instead of recyclable

It is quite challenging to properly recycle aluminum pods.  Unless they are washed and cleaned of coffee and other residue, they won’t be able to be recycled and this is how they end up in landfill where they take hundreds of years to break down.

During this time they contaminate the soil. On the other hand, compostable pods feed the soil instead of burdening it.

What is special about our pods?

First things first, they biodegrade within 6 months, just like cardboard or wood.

They can then be used as fertilizer for your plants. That in itself makes them special.

What materials are they made of?
They are produced using biopolymers and cereal flour. 

The end result is called Vegemat and it is a biodegradable and compostable material produced in France.

It doesn’t contain any traces of aluminum, petroleum or bisphenol A (BPA).

Why should you avoid these?
Aluminum

• Energy-intensive to mine and process, contributing to deforestation and pollution
  
• Difficult to recycle in practice; most pods end up in landfill and persist for hundreds of years as previously mentioned
  

Petroleum-Based Plastics

• Made from non-renewable fossil fuels, increasing carbon emissions and environmental impact
  
• Break down very slowly, contributing to microplastic pollution in soil and waterways
  
• Often multi-layered and non-recyclable, making proper disposal difficult
  

Bisphenol A (BPA)

Avoiding BPA ensures safer, chemical-free beverages and aligns with consumer health concerns

Can leach into hot liquids like coffee, leading to direct human exposure
